Tequila: Questions & Answers
What is the difference between blanco, reposado and añejo tequila?
Blanco (silver) is unaged or rested for under two months. Reposado is aged 2 to 12 months in oak. Añejo is aged 1 to 3 years, and extra añejo is aged more than 3 years.
What does 100% agave mean?
A tequila labeled 100% agave is made only from blue Weber agave. Tequilas without that label are 'mixto' and can contain up to 49% other sugars.
Where is tequila made?
Tequila can only be made in Mexico, in the state of Jalisco and designated areas of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas.
What is the difference between tequila and mezcal?
Tequila is made from blue Weber agave, usually cooked in ovens or autoclaves. Mezcal can be made from many agave varieties, which are traditionally roasted in earthen pits, giving it a smoky flavor.
